Certified Athletic Therapist

Dance Educator

Hello!
My name is Sam and I am a Certified Athletic Therapist and Dance Educator. Let me tell you a little bit about my background.

Athletic Therapy Background

I attended the University of Calgary to obtain my Bachelors of Kinesiology majoring in Athletic Therapy in 2011, and obtained my Advanced Certificate in Athletic Therapy from Mount Royal University in 2010.

During my education, I was the team therapist for the Dinos Men’s Volleyball team in 2009-2010 and for the Dinos Women’s Rugby Team and Wrestling Teams in 2010-2011. During this time I also worked with other teams including Football, basketball, hockey and field hockey. In my final year of schooling I received the Kinemedics Clinical Achievement Award for my performance as a student therapist.

Following my graduation and full Certification as an Athletic Therapist, I continued to work with Rugby more specifically as I grew a great passion for the sport and community.

I was the club therapist for the Calgary Irish Rugby Club from 2010 - 2013 and worked with Div 1, 2 & 3 Mens teams. I also continued to work with the Women and worked as the therapist for the Rugby Alberta Senior Women’s Team from 2010-2013. In 2012 I also worked with Rugby Canada at their spring training and ID camps. In 2013 I travelled with the Dinos Women’s Rugby Team to Ireland and Wales for a tour.

Aside from Rugby, I continued to work with student therapists, educating them and training them throughout their education as well as for a variety of other sports through UofC Sports Therapy Services which covered high school sports of a wide variety including football, soccer, field hockey and rugby.

In 2012 I began working for Lifemark Health Centre in Calgary as a Return to Work specialists, and later progressed to a Functional Capacity Evaluator. I then transferred to Lifemark in Kelowna in 2013 where I continued with Functional Assessments and occupational rehabilitation.

While in the Okanagan, I have also continued to work with sports and have worked with Okanagan Hockey Academy and Pursuit of Excellence.

I use my Athletic Therapy knowledge every day when teaching dance and incorporate my knowledge to teach dance in a safe manner that promotes healthy performance.

Dance Background

I began dancing at the age of 3 and never stopped! I grew up in Hinton, AB and trained in a wide variety of disciplines including tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, contemporary, hip hop & musical theatre. I also began student teaching/assisting here at the age of 13 and at 16 was able to start instructing some of my own classes. I knew from an early age that I wanted to be a teacher and share my knowledge and passion for dance with others.

In 2004 my family relocated to Edmonton and I attended Victoria School of Performing & Visual Arts. This is where I really truly learned to appreciate the art form of dance and the love for movement over just competitive routines. This is also where I learned about Cheerleading and began to become more interested in Gymnastics and acro.

In 2005 my family relocated yet again to Golden, BC. At the time there were no dance studios within the town, and I couldn’t imagine living somewhere that didn’t have dance. So myself, my sister and my mom opened our own dance studio, Impulse Dance.

I taught at the studio from 2005 - 2010. In 2007 I was accepted to the University of Calgary but continued to choreograph and teach workshops on weekends. I also completed my NCCP Level 1 for Gymnastics during this time and coached for a few years, with younger students in Golden and then at the U of C training centre.

I took a small break from teaching dance from 2010 - 2013 and focused my energy on providing my skills as an AT to the rugby teams I was working with but continued to work at dance competitions as a clerk/writer.

In 2013, I moved to Kelowna and was asked to teach dance again at Aspirations Dance Studio. I taught here until they closed before transferring some of my teaching to Creators Arts Centre.

When The Kore Dance Project opened, I also started teaching there, and as many of you know, I am still there today!

From 2016 - 2021 I was the Senior Production Manager for Showtime Dance Productions, a dance competition company. I organized and ran events across Western Canada during this time.

Now I am ready to jump into my own project and mix my two passions: Dance and AT. With my extensive dance, gymnastics and acro knowledge, I hope to provide dancers and performing artists in the Okanagan with specialized care that can only come from someone who has experienced it for themselves.
